The nation has gone insane, and here is the proof:

Donald Trump is crushing his competition

The core of Trump’s campaign platform is based on his opposition to illegal immigration and his heated rhetoric describing it.

And Republican voters seem to be responding: 44% of them told CNN that Trump was the best candidate to handle the issue.

What exactly is Trump’s “cure” for illegal immigration? In addition to the impossibility and immorality of building a 2,000 mile (Berlin) wall and “forcing” Mexico to pay for it, here is the other part of his “plan.”

Bill O’Reilly confronts Donald Trump: You can’t ‘deport people who have American citizenship’

Trump called for ending birthright citizenship, or the right of anyone born in the US to American citizenship.

“That’s not going to happen because the 14th Amendment says if you’re born here, you’re an American,” O’Reilly said. “And you can’t kick Americans out. The courts would block you at every turn. You must know all that.”

Trump insisted that the Constitution did not grant citizenship to “anchor babies,” a pejorative term used to describe the children of people who enter the country illegally with the purpose of having a son or daughter who would then be granted US citizenship.

“Bill, I think you’re wrong about the 14th Amendmen. And frankly, the whole thing with ‘anchor babies’ and the concept of ‘anchor babies’ — I don’t think you’re right about that.”

O’Reilly was incredulous.

If someone is so right-wing bigoted that even Bill O’Reilly is incredulous, they must really have gone off the rails.

“I can quote it!” O’Reilly exclaimed. “You want me to quote you the amendment? If you’re born here, you’re an American — period! Period!”

The Fox host later added: “You are not going to be able to deport people who have American citizenship now. And the federal courts will never allow mass deportations without due process for each and every one.

“And do you envision federal police kicking in the doors in barrios around the country, dragging families out?”

Hmmm . . . An amoral politician, basing his popularity on fomenting hatred against a minority. Government police kicking in doors, dragging families out and deporting them.

Does that remind you of anything?

Mr. Trump, perhaps Germany still has some cattle cars you can use, when you drag the people out to deport them.

But Trump, citing unnamed lawyers, held his ground on the citizenship issue.

“Bill, I don’t think that they have American citizenship,” he said. “And if you speak to some very, very good lawyers — and I know some would disagree, but many of them agree with me — you’re going to find they do not have American citizenship. We have to start a process where we take back our country. Our country is going to hell.”

For the record, the text of the amendment would seem to favor O’Reilly’s interpretation in the dispute. It states: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States.”

The latest polls indicate 44% of Republicans feel Trump is the best candidate to handle the immigration issue.

44% of Republicans! If that doesn’t scare the heck out of you, then you have zero understanding of history.

But Trump is right about one thing: Our country is going to hell.

And Trump is taking us there.

A man I know — an intelligent man — made what I consider to be an unintelligent comment about a candidate.

He said, “I like Donald Trump because he says what he thinks and he tells the facts.

I was so taken aback by this, I barely could mumble, “Adolph Hitler said what he thinks, and Trump’s ‘facts’ are bullshit.”

With each passing day, Trump will be shown to be a lying bigot, whose appeal will shrink as thinking Americans begin thinking, and the bigots slink back into the shadows.

At least I pray so.

That said, I began to think about Trump’s (and Hitler’s) appeal.

I suspect that what my friend really meant is, “I like Donald Trump because he says what I think and he tells the facts I want to believe.

I don’t think my friend is a bigot. I think he is hoping for solutions to what he has been told repeatedly by the Tea/Republicans, namely: Undocumented immigrants are a serious problem; they are criminals, who are taking jobs and costing taxpayers money.

All non-factual, but emotions beat facts every time.

The facts are:
1. Undocumented immigrants are less likely to be criminals than are American citizens in the same economic position.
2. Immigrants create jobs by being consumers
3. They don’t cost federal taxpayers one dime. Though short term they may cost local taxpayers money, longer term, they themselves will be taxpayers, who will support the community.)

In short, the Tea/Republican Party, in its rapacious craving for political power, has created a monster scapegoat: “Evil” Mexican immigrants.

And now that Trump has tossed that tar baby into the political ring, the Tea/Republicans are furiously backpedaling, trying to wipe the tar off.

Watch as first Rick Perry, the strongly anti-immigrant governor, suddenly realizes he is about to get stuck with tar:

Donald Trump feuds with Rick Perry, calls him dumb

Donald Trump has jumped back into the ring — this time for an all-out brawl with fellow Republican presidential contender Rick Perry.

Trump started the feud with multiple comments in recent weeks bashing Perry’s work securing the border while serving as governor of Texas.

After several measured defenses of his border policies, on Thursday Perry finally fired back with a more aggressive statement, saying, “What Mr. Trump is offering is not conservatism, it is Trump-ism — a toxic mix of demagoguery and nonsense.”

“Donald Trump continues to demonstrate his fundamental misunderstanding of border security,” said Perry.

Trump tweeted back: “.@GovernorPerry just gave a pollster quote on me. He doesn’t understand what the word demagoguery means.”

Governor Perry, you and your fellow Tea/Republicans created the lies that made the Donald Trump monster possible, and now you’re receiving your just reward.

Now perhaps you know how the immigrants feel when they are viewed as stupid criminals and a detriment to America.

The Republican-on-Republican smackdown was Trump’s second of the day.

On Thursday morning, the New Yorker published an interview with Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who said that Trump had “fired up the crazies” in the Republican party.

Trump responded by tweeting that McCain “should be defeated in the primaries.”

“Graduated last in his class at Annapolis — dummy!” Trump added.

Suddenly, for the Tea/Republicans, it’s not as much fun tossing stones of stupidity at helpless immigrants. The stones of stupidity are coming back, and one of your own is tossing them.

Mr. Trump’s comments about Mexicans are creating anxiety among many in his party, who fear his remarks will set back the GOP even further with the fast-growing Latino population just as presidential candidates such as Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush are reaching out to them.

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus urged Mr. Trump in a phone call Wednesday to “tone it down.”

“Tone it down.” What is that supposed to mean?

Does “tone it down” mean: “It’s O.K. to lie and vilify good and innocent men, women and children, who desperately want to build a better life — but just don’t jeopardize our election”?

Does “tone it down” mean: “We hate them as much as you do, and after the votes are counted, we’ll deport them all, but for now, please just pretend to like them”?

Hitler gained power by tapping into the fears and bigotry of the German (and Austrian and French) people. Trump is gaining the the polls by tapping into the fears and bigotry of conservatives.

Hitler led his nation to a well deserved disaster. Trump is leading his party to a well-deserved disaster.

Hitler tarred his scapegoats with the black lies the populace already believed. Trump is tarring immigrants with the black lies Tea/Republicans already believe.

But now that the tar, created by the right wing, has begun to splash on them, they wish to disassociate from their self-created disaster.

Trump says exactly what conservatives have been saying and implying; he just says it louder and more bluntly.

Cartoonists create caricatures to demonstrate reality. Trump is the caricature that demonstrates the reality of the Tea/Republican Party.

Now the conservatives look in the mirror, and see the tar all over them — and the picture is frightening.

Of whom does Donald Trump remind you?

In his comments, blaming undocumented immigrants for crime and hurting the economy, Trump is walking a well-traveled path, a path you will recognize:

“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”

“What can be simpler or more accurately stated? The Mexican Government is forcing their most unwanted people into the United States. They are, in many cases, criminals, drug dealers, rapists, etc.”

“I will be the greatest jobs president that God has ever created. I’ll bring back our jobs from China, from Mexico, from Japan, from so many places . . . and I’ll bring back our money.”

Data on immigrants and crime are incomplete, but a range of studies show there is no evidence immigrants commit more crimes than native-born Americans. In fact, first-generation immigrants are predisposed to lower crime rates than native-born Americans.

Immigration and crime levels have had inverse trajectories since the 1990s: immigration has increased, while crime has decreased. Some experts say the influx of immigrants contributed to the decrease in crime rates, by increasing the denominator while not adding significantly to the numerator.

When asked how the data are indicative of the Mexican government sending criminals to the United States, or that there is a crime wave coming across the border, a Trump campaign adviser said: “The data speaks for itself.”

The Congressional Research Service found that the vast majority of unauthorized immigrants do not fit in the category that fits Trump’s description: aggravated felons, whose crimes include murder, drug trafficking or illegal trafficking of firearms.

An analysis of 2010 Census data in a report from the American Immigration Council, a pro-immigration group, shows that 1.6 percent of immigrant males 18 to 39 years old were incarcerated, compared to 3.3 percent of native-born males.

That disparity in incarceration rates has been consistent in the decennial Census since 1980, the report says.

In short, Trump has lied to make undocumented Mexican immigrants scapegoats.

He falsely claims Mexicans are responsible for “lots of problems.” He falsely claims they are criminals and rapists, responsible for illegal drugs.

He claims the solution for these “problems” is to deport undocumented Mexicans.

Did Trump invent hatred of undocumented Mexicans? No, he built on and used anti-immigrant ideas that already existed.

The gasbag also said he will “be the greatest jobs president” and will grow the American economy, though he gives no clue about how he would do this, other than by deporting 12 million scapegoats.

Anne Frank House: An important term to mention here is ‘scapegoat’.

Hitler and the Nazis said the Jews were responsible for huge events like losing World War One and the economic crisis. This was totally untrue.

But by giving the Jews the blame Hitler created an enemy. Hitler said that all Germany’s problems had been caused by the Jews. Many people believed him.

The solution to all these problems was to banish the Jews from society. With this political message and the promise to make Germany a large and economically powerful country Hitler’s party won the 1932 election.

In 1933 he and his party came to power.

Did Hitler invent hatred of Jews? No, Hitler built on and used antisemitic ideas that already existed. He was Austrian and grew up in Vienna where the mayor was extremely antisemitic and where hatred of Jews was widespread. His hatred of Jews cannot be tied down to a specific event in his life.

Just as Hitler did, Trump appeals to the lowest instincts of humanity. He appeals to hatred and xenophobia.

His unapologetic “birther” campaign against President Obama, was a disguised appeal to haters of blacks.

Trump is our modern-day Hitler, and you will see that haters will be his core constituency, just as the haters were Hitler’s.

Most dictators have gained power via hatred of some group. It happened in Hitler’s Germany. It happened in Stalin’s Russia (Jews and Bolsheviks). It happened in Mao’s China (the rich, the educated, the clergy).

Always, there was some group at which hatred was directed — some group falsely blamed.

And the result always has been disaster, for that is where hatred always leads.

As Trump’s popularity rises, it is happening here.

He is forcing us onto a well-traveled path.
