Indeed. Of course, right-wingers and neoliberals will inevitably quote or paraphrase Milton Friedman (and also point to Europe) by saying “you can’t have open borders AND a welfare state. Pick ONE or the other” as some sort of “gotcha”. What do you think the best response/rebuttal to their argument would be?
You can’t have closed borders and economic or intellectual growth. To the GOP, borders must be open or closed. But, if we had a well-funded system for vetting potential immigrants, this country easily could accept millions of valuable immigrants, and benefit from them.
The problem is fear. The MAGA base is afraid that immigrants are smarter and will work harder, so they will replace the lazy, stupid people. Hmmm. . .
