No, it was not just the war

Mitt Romney identified 10 specific problems, with the Iran war being only one of them. His opening words were: “Bad policy and bad character make bad politics”

From the Deseret News:

Romney blames GOP midterm losses on ‘bad policy, bad character’

In a rebuke to his party, Romney pointed to the Trump administration’s own actions for losing its grip on Congress

Former Sen. Mitt Romney attributed Republicans’ sweeping losses in the midterm elections to a lack of sound policy and compassionate governing, urging members of his party to reverse course.

In a statement on social media, Romney criticized the Republican Party for what he viewed as missteps on issues ranging from the economy to immigration to government corruption.

Romney’s assessment comes as Republicans search for an answer as to why their performance was worse than what party leaders predicted, with lawmakers already pointing fingers.

Here is his complete list:

    1. Erratic tariffs
    2. Impulsive Iran war
    3. Blanket pardons
    4. Apparent corruption
    5. Weaponized justice
    6. ICE brutality
    7. Mountainous deficits
    8. Hiding Epstein
    9. Abandoning allies
    10. Coddling enemies

He concluded: “Hoping for a course correction, for the country and for my party.”

Contrast this with Vice President JD Vance, who claimed that the Iran war was the reason Republicans lost. Romney’s criticism was much more honest.

JD Vance blamed it on the war because he would like us to forget his participation in the most inept, cruel, corrupt, disorganized, dishonest political regime in American history.

Never forget how close America came to the complete undermining of our democratic principles. Recognize the dangerous parallels between MAGA ideology and historical fascism.

This serves as a critical lesson for future generations, even as Trump and today’s Republicans try to erase or ignore it by erecting gold-plated monuments to hatred.

For our weak-spined, acquiescent Republican Party, we have these historic words from Martin Luther King Jr., “There comes a time when silence is betrayal.”

We also must remember how even the words of our cherished Constitution can be corrupted by evil ideology. As Lord Acton (John Emerich Edward Dalberg-Acton) famously said, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

Those prescient words apply to the President, the Republican Party, the MAGA voters, and to the U.S. Supreme Court, who share the shame and the blame.

In short, it wasn’t just one evil, incompetent man. It was a nation, our beloved America, that succumbed to evil and just now begins an overdue recovery.

It is late. Let us pray it is not too late.

Rodger Malcolm Mitchell
