Who are America’s most foolish people?

That question allows for many possible answers. As H.L. Mencken famously said, “No one in this world, so far as I know — and I have searched the records for years, and employed agents to help me — has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people. Nor has anyone ever lost public office thereby.”

There a great deal of competition for the title. So I’ll give you a hint. Here are excerpts from articles that appeared in the 3/26/2023 Sun-Sentinel

Antisemitic vandalism, and propaganda growing faster than US rate

The ugly incidents started early in the year, then metastasized.

In Parkland, a school bus seat was vandalized with a swastika and an expletive directed at “the Jews.” In Davie, bricks were arranged to form a swastika on a school campus. In Hallandale Beach, an individual altered an image of a neighbor to look like Adolf Hitler, added swastikas and emailed it to the condo association.

In Boca Raton, a student told members of a competing team during a high school basketball game that “Hitler should have finished the job,” antisemitic comments were posted in the chat during a synagogue’s weekly livestream, and a lifeguard stand on a public beach was vandalized with a swastika.

And in Fort Lauderdale, Miami Beach and Surfside, hundreds

 of zip-close bags were tossed on lawns and driveways containing an antisemitic message that, among other things, blamed Jews for “the Covid agenda.”

In October, the performing artist and fashion designer Kanye West, who now goes by the name Ye, “promoted antisemitism on a global scale when he made numerous harmful, conspiratorial statements about Jews in a series of social media posts and interviews.

Those comments drew on longstanding antisemitic tropes,” ADL’s report said. And he praised Adolf Hitler and disputed fact related to the Holocaust.

The symbols of hate and far-right extremism on display in pro-Trump Capitol siege
Some rioters displayed extremist symbols of white supremacy and anarchy.

As a pro-Trump mob stormed the U.S. Capitol last Wednesday, symbols of white supremacy and extremist right-wing militias were displayed by rioters on flags, banners and clothing scattered in a sea of American flags, pro-Trump banners and campaign memorabilia.

And then there was:

The undocumented immigrants the Trump administration has been kicking out of the U.S. are “animals,” President Donald Trump said.

“We’re taking people out of the country. You wouldn’t believe how bad these people are. These aren’t people; they’re animals,” the president said during a White House roundtable on sanctuary cities.

We could go on and on about Trump, his denying the seriousness of COVID, downplaying the need for treatment and vaccination, and holding mass rallies that resulting in many COVID victims.

And let us forget his cheating on three wives, his fake Trump U., fake Trump Foundation, phony Trump airlines and other cons.

Do you remember his multiple bankruptcies that cheated lenders and investors, his cheating workers out of their wages — the list stretches to infinity. And of course his attempted coup, which continues even now.

But, America’s most foolish people are not the MAGAs. They are just down and dirty bigots, who would follow Satan if he promised to get rid of non-white, non-American, non-Christians.

No, America’s most foolish people are the blacks, browns, gays, immigrants, Jews, women, and Muslims who cast their precious vote for the compliant GOP, which long ago has traded its morality away for ratings.

I know some of those foolish folk. I even dined with a couple of them just recently. It was surreal.

Trust me on this: No matter how rich or educated they may be, they are fools. They learned nothing from Nazi Germany. They live in a narrow world of:

1. “I see nothing”
2. “It can’t happen here.”
3. “It can happen here, but it won’t happen to me.”

And it’s happening right before their eyes. The insults are painted on the walls and the walls are closing in. The maniacs have guns, and it’s legal.

So toss another book on the fire. Be careful what you say. Be careful what you think.

And pray, pray, this time is different.
