Britain promises more suicide (but just for the middle and the poor)

Britain, like the U.S., is ruled by those who wish to widen the gap between the rich and the rest. Here are excerpts from a New York Times article:

UK Needs 25 Billion Pounds of Spending Cuts After 2015 Vote, Osborne Says
By REUTERS, Published: January 6, 2014 at 4:20 AM ET

Chancellor George Osborne said on Monday, “We need to find a further 25 billion pounds of cuts after the election. We have to make decisions about where those cuts are to be found.

“After the election” is better than “before the election.” That way, the voters will not realize how screwed they are.

“This enormous welfare budget, that ultimately is where you can find substantial savings.”

He already has made “decisions about where those cuts are to be found”: Payments to the poor — of course.

You see, in the world of the rich, the poor have too much money, so the poor and middle classes continually must be beaten down, lest they gain any power at all. To a bribed politician, there is no greater danger than an informed and powerful middle- and lower class.

The UK uses its own currency, the pound. So it is Monetarily Sovereign. Unlike the euro nations, which have no sovereign currency, the UK never can run short of its sovereign currency.

The fundamental formula for Gross Domestic Product is: GDP = Federal Spending + Non-federal Spending + Net Exports. So, do the math:

1. How will a 25 billion pound reduction in Federal Spending affect Britain’s GDP?

2. How will a 25 billion pound reduction in the welfare budget affect the already-too-wide gap between the rich and the rest?

Sadly, the British education system must not have taught its people simple mathematics, else the people long ago would have tossed toadies-to-the-rich Osborne and Prime Minister David Cameron out of office.

Which brings me to the politicians in the US, which are doing much the same thing as the British . . .

What is the most serious life-threatening disease in America and the world?

According to Wikipedia:

A disease is an abnormal condition that affects the body of an organism. It may be caused by factors originally from an external source, such as infectious disease, or it may be caused by internal dysfunctions, such as autoimmune diseases.

In humans, “disease” is often used more broadly to refer to any condition that causes pain, dysfunction, distress, social problems, or death to the person afflicted, or similar problems for those in contact with the person.

Diseases usually affect people not only physically, but also emotionally, as contracting and living with many diseases can alter one’s perspective on life, and one’s personality.

The single most serious, life-threatening, life-taking disease in America and the world is poverty.

Poverty is an abnormal condition that affects people physically and emontionally. Poverty causes pain, dysfunction, distress, social problems, or death to the person afflicted, and similar problems for those in contact with the person.

More people are infected with poverty, and more people die from this disease, than from any other. It poisons and kills men and women. It kills children of all ages. It shatters entire families, even entire neighborhoods.

Excerpts from ScienceNews Magazine, December 14, 2013
Heal Thy Neighbor
BY Bruce Bower

The women of Mohmandara, in eastern Afghanistan, met at a local health clinic. Mental health workers had heard village women talking to each other about “feelings of sadness” and “worrying too much.”

The village women described being beaten and harassed by their husbands, who were spurred on by their mothers and sisters. Families were imploding. Everyone agreed that unemployment and poverty lay behind the surge of domestic violence.

Many people living in impoverished communities suffer from a mix of mild to moderate depression, anxiety disorders and stress reactions to traumatic experiences.

Many people have endured episodes of depression set off by lifelong poverty and social mistreatment

There are cures for the poverty disease, but strangely, they are not being administered, mostly because of the belief that victims are at fault for their own misery.

Consider these questions:

If you knew someone deathly ill from influenza, would you blame them for their illness? Would you withhold treatment because, “It’s their own fault. They should have taken a flu shot.”

If you knew someone dying of lung cancer, would you withhold treatment because they smoked?

Should medical help for your overweight friend, who is dying from heart disease or stroke be withheld because, “It’s his own fault”?

And what about children? Under what circumstances should help for sick children be withheld?

Poverty disease does not affect only those directly afflicted. Poverty disease causes crime, which causes more crime, which affects everyone, including those not impoverished.

Poverty is a communicable disease:

Scientific American Magazine, January 2014
Excerpts from Our Unconscious Mind
Professor John A. Bargh

Imitation instructs people what to do next: waiting patiently in a long line encourages others to do the same; holding a door for a neighbor, curbing on’es dog and not littering put others in a frame of mind to do the right thing.

Unfortunately, the natural tendency toward imitation cuts both ways. Researches placed graffiti on an alley wall, which led to an increasde in littering.

Research supports the “broken window” theory most famously championed by former NYC mayor Rudy Giuliani, who promoted the strict enforcement of laws against minor infractions — littering, jaywalking and vandalism; the dramatic drop in crime has been attributed, in part, to this policy.

Every day of your life, you pay for crime committed by poverty.

You pay for lost goods and services. You pay for insurance. You pay for police, courts and jails. You pay for lost lives, both of victims and perpetrators. You pay for the loss of benefits society would have received, had poverty-encouraged criminals led honest lives.

And think of the children, who suffer from poverty disease today, will suffer tomorrow, and will make you and the world suffer with them.

Poverty not only is the most common disease, and not only the most expensive disease, but poverty is perhaps the most treatable disease.

Poverty can be treated with money, with education, with housing, with food, with health care — all of which can be supplied by the federal government at no cost to anyone.

In fact, fighting poverty can add money to the economy, which in itself will benefit us all.

Yet, we allow this disease to destroy lives. We say the impoverished are to blame for their own poverty. We say helping the poor encourages sloth. We say it’s not fair to give to people what they should acquire for themselves.

We cured smallpox. We are close to curing polio. We fight cancer and heart disease. Yet, we allow poverty disease to kill, maim and cause suffering, while we blame the victims.

But we — all of us — are victims of this most terrible of all diseases.

Science has brought us radio, television, telephones, computers, smart phones, trips to the moon and journeys to Mars and beyond. But science has not brought us intelligence.

Science has brought us incandescent bulbs, neon bulbs, florescent bulbs and LED bulbs, but science has not taken us from the dark ages.

Science has brought us antibiotics, cloning, DNA analysis, and organ transplants, but science has not cured us of our 2,000-year-old beliefs.

Science has brought us viscose, acrylic, nylon, Orlon, Kevlar and Spandex, but still we cannot wrap our minds around the differences between fact and fiction.

Science includes physics, chemistry, geology, biology, zoology and botany, all of which agree on certain fundamentals, but science has not convinced us to rely on research and fact rather than on intuition and superstition.

In short, a significant number of us do not believe provable fact, but rather rely on what our friends, neighbors and favorite leaders tell us.

One-third of Americans reject evolution, poll shows

Sixty percent of Americans say that “humans and other living things have evolved over time,” a telephone survey by the Pew Research Center’s religion and Public Life Project showed.

But 33 percent reject the idea of evolution, saying that “humans and other living things have existed in their present form since the beginning of time,” Pew said in a statement.

The poll showed 43 percent of Republicans and 67 percent of Democrats say humans have evolved over time. White evangelical Protestants topped the list of those rejecting evolution, with 64 percent of those polled saying they believe humans have existed in their present form since the beginning of time.

“This has been a staple of evangelical Protestantism for nearly 100 years,” said Alan Lichtman, an American University history professor and author of “White Protestant Nation: The Rise of the American Conservative Movement.”

For a large portion of Americans, nothing has been learned in the two thousand years since most portions of the bible were written, and a thousand years since the “Dark Ages.” It’s as though time has stood still for much of our population.

Despite the mountain of evidence science has given us, a significant number prefer to remain ignorant — more than ignorant, but downright stupid, for intentionally to ignore facts in favor of superstition can only be called “stupid.”

And though many Democrats are stupid (believing President Obama on almost any issue), Republicans are far more stupid (how else to explain the popularity of Palin, Bachmann, Cain, Perry, Cruz et all?)

This is why the public believes The Big Lie — the claim that the federal government can run short of dollars to pay its bills and that dollar creation causes hyperinflation and that deficit reduction benefits our children and grandchildren. A significant number of people would rather trust their intuition rather than facts.

If facts don’t work and stupidity never changes, how then can Monetary Sovereignty save the populace from its self-imposed misery? How then to convince the poor and middle classes to emerge from the darkness of an unnecessary despair, into the sunlight of reason?

As the Democrats do not advance, and the Republicans slide ever deeper into the black hole of ancient religiosity, there seems no hope of rescue.

The human brain may be nature’s saddest failed experiment.

======================================================================================================================================================================================

The National Draft Ben Carson for President Committee (Yes, there is one) posted an ad telling us the plans of the latest right wing hero (following such brilliant eminences as Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, Herman Cain, Rick Perry, Michele Bachmann, and Ted Cruz).

Here is what they said:

Ben Carson will…
1. Repeal Obamacare and replace it with a free market approach

Translation: Everyone will pay for their own health insurance. Those who can’t afford it, will just have to do without.

2. End redistribution of income policies because they are immoral, unworkable and unjust.

Translation:Make sure the income/wealth/power gap between the rich and the rest, keeps growing. It’s a dog-eat-dog world. Get rich or get eaten.

3. Balance the federal budget by cutting spending across the board by 10% each year until the budget is balanced.

Translation: Cut spending on everything that benefits the middle and poor: Carson loves austerity, because it has worked so well everywhere — for the rich.

4. Appoint judges that believe in the original intent of those that wrote the Constitution

Translation: For instance extreme right wingers Scalia, Thomas and Alito, who decided the rich should be able to spend as much as they want, to buy elections.

5. End the war on religion, and defend your right to witness your faith.

Translation: Get rid of that pesky 1st Amendment. This is a Christian nation, isn’t it? Screw Muslims, Jews, Buddists, Hindus, atheists and all the rest whose parents don’t think like me.

6. Tell the truth to the American people

Translation: Lie to the American people.

7. Follow a policy of peace through strength and if it becomes necessary to fight, his response will be overwhelming, not proportional

Translation: If anyone doesn’t agree with us, bomb the heck out of them. And don’t worry about how many of our soldiers and foreigners we kill. That is the America I love.

8. Reduce taxes across the board for all Americans

Translation: Reduce taxes on the people who pay the most taxes (and who give the most campaign contributions). You know who you are. Wink, wink.

9. Reduce regulations and the red tape that stifle economic growth

Translation: Cut the already minimal regulations on crooked bankers, oil companies, chemical companies, stock brokers, food companies, pharmaceutical companies, auto companies, telephone solicitors, air and water polluters and everyone else who might profit from less regulation.

10. Defend your right to keep and bear arms

Translation: Including machine guns, bazookas, and rocket-propelled grenades. Give me one reason why not.

11. Support school voucher programs.

Translation: Fund religious and other private schools (which can select which rich students they want), while taking money from public schools.

12. Encourage any and all energy production to make the USA totally energy independent

Translation:Yes, I know. We already are energy independent. But I get paid to say this. Ecology, smology. Drill, baby, drill.

13. End political correctness

Translation: Why do we have to be so nice to those gays, Latinos, Jews, Muslims, atheists, women, immigrants, disabled or poor? Let them be self-sufficient like me . . . or starve. (Did he mention that political correctness is good for demanding apologies from the left, for any perceived insults. The right walks both sides of that fence.)

O.K., I don’t know that Ben Carson actually is running for President. Just because people are collecting hundreds of thousands of dollars for his non-existent campaign and he is flying all over the country giving speeches about what’s best for America, that doesn’t prove anything.

And OK, he said, “As far as my running for public office, that was never my intention. I thought when I retired I was going to play golf and learn how to play an organ. But, obviously, the good Lord had a different plan for me. I will obviously listen, but that is not what I really had intended to do.” (Unless you beg me. Please beg me.) But, that doesn’t prove he actually wants to be President.

And just because he opposes Obama’s (weak, as usual) $2.85 hike in the federal minimum wage, which currently stands at $7.25 an hour, or around $15,000 a year, that doesn’t make Carson a suck-up to the rich.

And just because a surgeon, who boasts about having zero political experience, wrote the obligatory, pre-Presidential book, America the Beautiful, that doesn’t mean he actually is running for office.

(As an aside, no company would hire someone with zero experience, to be its CEO. Yet somehow, we are expected to believe having zero experience is a good criterion for running the United States of America.)

And just because the media now refer to him as a “Tea Party hero,” doesn’t mean he’s yet another, in what has become a long, long line of extremist, right-wing, Koch-brothers-loving, screw-the-poor, nut-cases.

But then again . . .

Are there any moderate Republicans left?
