Hitler in America. Why a bigot can win the Presidency

THE POST WAS PUBLISHED IN JULY, 2015

If you want to know why a bigot can win the Presidency, read this:

Trump’s model

Republican Donald Trump is an obvious and transparent racist.

Made rich by his daddy, he surrounds himself with bootlickers, telling him he’s right — and like many rich fools, he believes what they tell him.

He appeals to the worst and lowest aspects of American society — the haters and those of low morals and intelligence, who leap at the chance to blame someone, anyone, for their own deservedly low self-esteem:

Donald Trump doubles down on Mexico ‘rapists’ comments despite outrage

Trump claimed statistics show that undocumented Latino immigrants are more likely to perpetrate rape than the wider population. However, the Fusion article he referred to said 80% of women crossing the Mexican border are raped along the way, often by criminal gangs, traffickers or corrupt officials.

When CNN host Don Lemon pointed out that Trump had misread the article, the former Apprentice host said: “Well, somebody’s doing the raping, Don! I mean somebody’s doing it! Who’s doing the raping? Who’s doing the raping?

“If you look at the statistics of people coming, you look at the statistics on rape, on crime, on everything coming in illegally into this country it’s mind-boggling!”

Trump’s entire statement was: “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best . . .” [Comment: Mexico is not “sending” people. People are fleeing Mexico to come to America for a better life.]Image result for trump

“They’re sending people who have lots of problems. And they’re bringing those problems to us. They’re bringing drugs . . . “ [Comment: The vast majority of arrested undocumented immigrants (actually 95%) are not charged with bringing drugs. They are charged only with . . . that’s right: Being undocumented. That is their crime.]

“They’re bringing crime . . .” [Comment: Does Immigration Increase Crime? The results of the analysis are clear: “There’s essentially no correlation between immigrants and violent crime. Given some media depictions of immigrants as violent, or associated with human trafficking and the drug trade, this finding may come as a surprise to many. There’s a long perception that immigration increases crime, and when you look at neighborhoods where lots of immigrants live. These are typically not the best neighborhoods. These are violent places. So there’s this anecdotal association between immigrants and violent crime that just doesn’t turn out to be true in the data.”]

“They’re rapists. . . ” [There is zero data to support this. Trump twisted a report that said Mexican women are being raped on the way here — a huge jump from Mexican immigrants being rapists.]

Finally, Trump uses the standard bigot’s excuse: “I love the Mexican people; I do business with the Mexican people.”

It’s a take on the old, “Some of my best friends are black,” line.

Any moral person of normal intelligence will see Trump for what he is, a big-mouthed, egomaniacal extremist, as much a danger to America as Hitler was to Germanyand using the same tactics.

Sadly, America has its share of low-morals followers, as witness some of the comments at:

Bush says he takes Trump’s immigration remarks personallyWhen Trump announced his presidential bid last month, he criticized Mexico and immigrants who come to the U.S. illegally. “They’re bringing drugs,” he said. “They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.”

COMMENTS BY READERS

–America is sick of the illegal alien problem and Americans are overwhelmingly against any type of amnesty for illegal aliens. Anybody that is anything short of a turnip has figured out by now Jeb Bush isn’t going to do a damn thing about illegal aliens except something that favors and coddles illegal aliens. If elected, Jeb would be a middle of the road push over…a piece of light bread soaked in water. Trump is at least old school tough and not afraid to speak out. We would be way better off with Trump.

–I work at a rural Colorado hospital and am offended every time a fence jumper delivers ANOTHER baby (aka an instant American citizen)…FREE OF CHARGE…on my dime! I am offended that ILLEGALS are allowed to qualify for housing and food assistance…ON MY DIME! These criminals refuse to assimilate and hang their Mexican flags on their porches. I would much rather see our Confederate Flag than a Mexican one. Maybe we should throw a liberal hissy fit and we, the people, ban MEXICAN FLAGS!

–This just shows that Bush has a lot more in common with the Dems than with his own party. Trump, is the only GOP nominee who has come out strongly against immigration and that is what the conservatives want to hear.

–Bush also implied he would be telling conservatives to embrace policies like amnesty and Common Core, which is reminiscent of former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman’s all-in approach to global warming during his failed 2012 presidential campaign.

–Did anyone ever tell Bush 69% of the american people oppose illegal immigration? About 58% of Americans support deportation of all illegals. Sound pretty mainstream to me.

–How about the many American citizens who have also been killed and murdered, by illegal aliens, including our law enforcement officers; are you taking those murders personally too?

–What about the 25 American citizens who are killed each day by illegal aliens, either by traffic accidents (i.e. drunk driving, hit-and-runs, etc.), during the commission of a crime, and unlawful discharge of firearms; are you taking those personally too?

The hate and bigotry goes on and on. You find this particularly on right-wing web sites.

Why? Because the right wing has been sowing the winds of hatred since Obama became President, and now America is reaping the whirlwind.

No Republican candidate has a chance to be nominated unless he/she spews the anti-science, anti-poor, anti-black, anti-brown, anti-gay, anti-women, pro-rich platform.

Through most of my life, I actually voted Republican, but the current extremist, hateful, religionist bent of the party is too reminiscent of Hitler for my taste. It should be repugnant to every American.

If you are part of any minority in America, you should be very frightened. History is littered with Hitlers, Stalins and Maos. Most dictators have used bigotry and hatred to gain political power.

I pray American will see Trump for what he is. Or the America, of which we are so proud, will be no more. We’ll be Nazi Germany.

And don’t think it couldn’t happen here.

The Germans didn’t think it could happen to them, either.

Do politicians ever stop lying? Does a flea-ridden dog ever stop scratching?

1. As we all know, Iran is a nuclear threat to (Pick one):
_____ America
_____ Israel
_____ The Middle East
_____ The eastern hemisphere
_____ All of the above

2. And, as we all know, Iran is ruled by (Pick one)
_____ Crazy, irrational religionists
_____ Smart, dangerous religionists
_____ Deceptive, duplitious religionists
_____ All of the above

3. As we all know, we can stop Iran from getting “the bomb” by (Pick one):
_____ Negotiating with them
_____ Bombing them
_____ Invading them
_____ All of the above

4. We all know these things to be true, because:
_____ Barack Obama told us
_____ John Kerry told us
_____ Bebe Netanyahu told us
_____ All of the above

If you substitute “Iraq” for “Iran” and “Bush” for “Obama,” you’ll see why this movie sounds familiar.

So where do we stand today? We have “the bomb.” So does Russia, China, India, Pakistan, the UK, France, Israel, North Korea and heaven knows who else.

Of all these, only the U.S. has actually dropped the bomb on someone.

But we are, and always will be, ruled by logical, thoughtful, peaceful governments — especially if a level-headed leader like Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Ben Carson, Chris Christie, Mike Huckabee, Bobby Jindal, Rick Santorum, or yet another Bush becomes president.

We know we can trust them to keep us safe.

The rest of the nuclear nations also are ruled by logical, thoughtful, peaceful governments, especially North Korea. So it is vital to world peace that Iran, the only nation ruled by religious or political nuts, be prevented from having nuclear weapons.

That is why I am so relieved by this article:

Iran atomic bomb probe may be completed in 2015: IAEA

Vienna (AFP) – A long-delayed investigation into whether Iran has sought to develop nuclear weapons could be completed by the end of the year with Tehran’s help, the head of the UN atomic watchdog said Saturday.

Following his talks in Tehran earlier this week, UN watchdog chief Yukiya Amano said “progress was made on the way forward, but more work is needed.”

“With the cooperation from Iran I think we can issue a report by the end of the year on the … clarification of the issues related to possible military dimensions,” Amano told reporters before heading into talks with global powers in Vienna.

Oh, thank heavens. I wasn’t worried about Russia, China, India, Pakistan, the UK, France, Israel, North Korea bombing us or allowing terrorists to gain control over a bomb.

But I was in an absolute panic about Iran, which is why I genuflect daily in front of a John Kerry statue in my bathroom. Just knowing that Iran may not have the bomb for at least — what, five more years? — gives me hope for peace in the world.

And that is why I’m delighted that President Obama has invested so much of his attention to Iran and his anger at Israel, rather than on, for instance North Korea or China. After all, he knows where the danger to America really lies.

And speaking of lies, what about Iraq’s Weapons of Mass Destruction that cost thousands of American boys and girls their lives and limbs? Shouldn’t we attack them, too?

Oh, you mean, the previous Bush . . .

How much is your child’s life, health and brain worth?

That is the question Justice Antonin Scalia and the other four right-wing justices want you and the government to answer.

High court blocks power plant regulations without cost estimates
Richard Wolf, USA TODAY, June 29, 2015

WASHINGTON – A narrowly divided Supreme Court on Monday blocked federal clean air regulations on coal- and oil-fired power plants that have been on the drawing board for a quarter century.

The 5-4 ruling stops the Environmental Protection Agency, at least for now, from imposing new rules designed to reduce the amount of mercury and other toxins that pollute the nation’s air, at an unknown net cost to companies and consumers.

The decision was written by Justice Antonin Scalia, with the other four conservative justices agreeing.

While the estimated annual cost of $9.6 billion is not widely disputed, the cost-benefit ratio is. Opponents said the benefits are as low as $4 million a year. Proponents said when all secondary pollutants are considered, they’re as high as $90 billion.

Only government agencies, especially the right-wing element of the Supreme Court could put a money value on the mercury and other toxins we breathe.

Here is what Scalia says about his favorite subject, money (what he terms, “free speech).

“One would not say that it is even rational, never mind ‘appropriate,’ to impose billions of dollars in economic costs in return for a few dollars in health or environmental benefits,” Scalia said from the bench. “No regulation is ‘appropriate’ if it does significantly more harm than good.”

How much mercury and other toxins, spewed into the air, is “good” compared with the “harm” of big corporations having to spend money?

Apparently, the Supreme Court wishes to listen to arguments about that.

The government said the regulations would prevent premature deaths and illnesses from asthma, cancer and heart disease, and protect pregnant women and unborn children whose fetal brain development can be harmed by overexposure to mercury.

Environmental groups said 4,200 to 11,000 lives could be saved each year.

Question for Justice Scalia et al: If the law would save “only” 4,200 deaths per year, is that sufficient? Or do you require saving 11,000 lives per year?

Or is even that number insufficient to satisfy the Republican Congress?

“The mere fact that the EPA wished to ignore the costs of its rules demonstrates how little the agency is concerned about the effects it has on the American people [and] the EPA continued to burden the public with more and more costs even as so many are still struggling to get by and improve their lives in this economy,” said House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, California Republican.

According to Rep. McCarthy, death, asthma, cancer, heart disease and injured fetal brain development are not a “burden” on the public. To McCarthy, the only burden is on corporate profits.

And what about those pregnant women and unborn children? Does the right wing care only about saving unborn children from abortion but not about saving them from mercury poisoning?

Is the difference that you wish to save rich corporations from money costs, but don’t wish to save poor women and children from life costs?

Vickie Patton, general counsel at the Environmental Defense Fund said, “With a few adjustments to its analyses, EPA can ensure that America’s children are protected from the toxic mercury pollution discharged by coal-fired power plants.”

But Richard Faulk, an appellate lawyer who represents companies against environmental damage claims, said forcing the EPA to consider costs represents a “clear victory for industry and the rule of law.

Well, we all can breathe easier now, knowing that industry has a clear victory, despite the toxic effects on the American people. Too bad our children can’t breathe easier.

The Supreme Court ruled last April that the government could compel 28 states to slash ozone and fine particle emissions from power plants because the pollution crosses state lines.

See, it’s like this. Ozone and fine particle emissions cross state lines. Mercury and other toxins stop at the state line and wait for permission from the Supreme Court.

Makes sense to me.

But if it doesn’t make sense to you, how about this one:

(In June) the court blocked the administration from requiring permits for greenhouse gas emissions from new or modified industrial facilities. But the justices said the EPA could regulate such emissions from industries already required to get permits for other air pollutants.

When judges make decisions based on what is best for the moneyed interests, while trying to pretend they’re’s not doing exactly that, the decisions eventually become more inconsistent and nonsensical.

How much is your child’s life, health and brain worth?

Perhaps you should ask the Koch brothers and the dozen or more Republican Presidential candidates.

Then they can tell the Supreme Court.

The “religious” right tries to turn gay rights into an anti-Christian, religious oppression issue.

America has heard this song before. It was called “miscegenation,” aka “race mixing,” aka interracial marriage.

What follows is a brief outline of an excellent article that deserves a thorough reading:

Interracial Marriage Laws — A Short Timeline History
By Tom Head

1664: Maryland passes the first British colonial law banning marriage between whites and slaves — a law that, among other things, orders the enslavement of white women who have married black men.

1691: The Commonwealth of Virginia bans all interracial marriages, threatening to exile whites who marry people of color. In the 17th century, exile usually functioned as a death sentence.

1780: Pennsylvania, which had passed a law banning interracial marriage in 1725, repeals it as part of a series of reforms intended to gradually abolish slavery within the state and grant free blacks equal legal status.

1843: Massachusetts becomes the second state to repeal its anti-miscegenation law, further cementing the distinction between Northern and Southern states on slavery and civil rights.

1871: Rep. Andrew King (D-MO) proposes a U.S. constitutional amendment banning all marriage between whites and people of color in every state throughout the country.

1883: In Pace v. Alabama, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously rules that state-level bans on interracial marriage do not violate the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The ruling will hold for more than 80 years.

Despite what you may believe, Justice Antonin Scalia was not a member of the 1883 Court that legalized the ban on interracial marriage. He was back there only in mind and spirit.

1912: Rep. Seaborn Roddenbery (D-GA) makes a second attempt to revise the U.S. Constitution in order to ban interracial marriage in all 50 states.

1922: Congress passes the Cable Act, retroactively stripping the citizenship of any U.S. citizen who married “an alien ineligible for citizenship,” which – under the racial quota system of the time – primarily meant Asian Americans.

1928: Sen. Coleman Blease (D-SC), a Ku Klux Klan supporter who had previously served as South Carolina’s governor, makes a third and final serious attempt to revise the U.S. Constitution in order to ban interracial marriage in every state.

1964: In McLaughlin v. Florida, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously rules that laws banning interracial sex violate the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

While the ruling did not directly address laws banning interracial marriage, it laid down the groundwork for a ruling that definitively did.

1967: The U.S. Supreme Court unanimously overturns Pace v. Alabama (1883), ruling in Loving v. Virginia that state bans on interracial marriage violate the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

As Chief Justice Earl Warren wrote for the Court:

“The freedom to marry has long been recognized as one of the vital personal rights essential to the orderly pursuit of happiness by free men … To deny this fundamental freedom on so unsupportable a basis as the racial classifications embodied in these statutes, classifications so directly subversive of the principle of equality at the heart of the Fourteenth Amendment, is surely to deprive all the State’s citizens of liberty without due process of law.

The Fourteenth Amendment requires that the freedom of choice to marry not be restricted by invidious racial discriminations. Under our Constitution, the freedom to marry, or not marry, a person of another race resides with the individual and cannot be infringed by the State.”

Substitute the words “sexual orientation” for the word “racial” and you have today’s discussion.

Compare the giant Earl Warren with today’s lilliputian Chief Justice John Roberts. Truly sad. The Christian right wing of the Supreme Court has learned neither from history nor from the “love all humanity” teachings of Christ.

2000: Following a November 7th ballot referendum, Alabama becomes the last state to officially legalize interracial marriage.

By November 2000, interracial marriage had been legal in every state for more than three decades thanks to the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Loving v. Virginia (1967) – but the Alabama State Constitution still contained an unenforceable ban in Section 102:

“The legislature shall never pass any law to authorise or legalise any marriage between any white person and a Negro or descendant of a Negro.”

The Alabama State Legislature stubbornly clung to the old language as a symbolic statement of the state’s views on interracial marriage

You can be sure the “red” states will adopt the same posture regarding same-sex marriage. Mike Huckabee already has begun his “resist” campaign.

Interracial marriage remains controversial in the Deep South, where a 2011 poll found that a plurality of Mississippi Republicans still support anti-miscegenation laws.

The Republicans will play to Southern bigotry, cynically portraying themselves as fighting for “religious freedom” (i.e. domination).

In the right wing world, “religious freedom” requires trampling minorities, while claiming that Christianity is the oppressed minority in America.

We all have heard this song, before — the high-minded claims of biblical support, the denials of bigotry, the attempts to revise the Constitution, the attempts to resist the law.

Unfortunately, we’ll have to hear it, again.

But despite the Scalias, the Alitos, the Roberts, the Thomases, the Huckabees and Santorums, Americans are fundamentally decent, and years from now, this bit of right wing bigotry will be but an historical oddity.
