  1. The Supreme Court has upheld the Trump administration’s suspension of nearly $800 million in NIH grants on race and gender research, forcing recipients to seek relief in lower courts.

The decision, stemming from President Donald Trump’s executive order against “gender ideology,” has drawn backlash from 16 Democratic-led states. Opponents have argued that Trump’s order and the suspension of funds undermines federal procedures and vital research.

U.S. District Judge William Young said, “I have never seen government racial discrimination like this.”, Plaintiffs argued the NIH grant cuts discriminate against marginalized groups. U.S. District Judge William Young briefly restored funding, citing disruption, but the Supreme Court’s split decision allowed suspensions to proceed.

Chief Justice John Roberts joined liberals in partial dissent. The Supreme Court stated that “the plaintiffs’ contention that they lack the resources to continue their research projects without federal funding is inconsistent with the proposition that they have the resources to make the government whole for money already spent.”

Justice Amy Coney Barrett warned the ruling could weaken defense of DEI policies. The administration won a preliminary suspension of grants, leaving researchers’ futures uncertain.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson argued the decision harms vital biomedical research funding. Jackson said, “This represents racial discrimination and discrimination against America’s LGBTQ community.”

The Trump administration’s appeal of Judge William Young’s ruling is before the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals. The court has refused to delay the lower court’s order while the case proceeds.

  2. To me all this seems to revolve around the word, the concept and the expression of compassion … either one has it to some degree or does not. The MAGAits are quite lacking, as fully demonstrated by their leadership.
