O.K., O.K., I know. This may be a bit of a stretch, I’m no expert and nobody asked me. But . . .
If ingesting many thousands of units of vitamin D weren’t helpful to our health, why does the human body expend the energy to manufacture 20,000 units from only 20 minutes in the summer sun? And why did our skin expend the energy to turn white as we moved from Africa to more northern lattitudes?

Rodger,
Good points. However, we didn’t “expend” energy turning our skin white as we moved from Africa. Natural selection meant those with lighter complexions survived better in northern latitudes as it allowed their bodies to manufacture more Vitamin D. No energy” needed…..

I think that producing melanin takes energy. Not producing it saves energy. So not having to produce it during the winter is a net benefit.

Min and Jack,
I suspect you both are correct. See what happens when I stray beyond my zone of expertise?
