How many Christians are there in America?
I don’t know Christianity. I don’t know the various groups — Catholic, Eastern Othodox Protestant — nor all the various sects within the groups.
I am a Jew, aka a “pre-Christian,” just like Jesus Christ, who also was a “pre-Christian.”
If he existed, he didn’t just love me; he was me. “Christian” means follower of Christ, and follower means that which comes after.
Follower also means adherent, someone who follows the example of. So all Christians are pledged to follow the example of Jesus Christ. If not, then what is a Christian?
The “last supper,” I again am reminded this season, was a Passover seder. When we had our seder a few days ago, we followed essentially the same rituals Christ would have followed. He would have told the story of the Exodus, as did we.
The holiday commemorates our (Christ’s and my) ancestors fleeing from oppression. To celebrate Passover, neither Christ nor I drank babies blood, as some pseudo-Christians have claimed. Christ would have drunk four cups of wine, as did we.
And by the way, I did not kill my brother Jew, Jesus. Nor do Christ or I have horns on our heads.
My meager understanding of Christ is that he was all about love. There was no hatred in the man. He, as it is written, loved the poor, loved the downtrodden, loved the weak, the tired, the homeless, loved the helpless in the face of cruelty. Mostly, he loved the compassionate.
Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times? “Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.”
So, I ask again, how many Christians — followers of Christ — are there in America?
Does a follower of Christ despise immigrants who do not have citizenship? Christ, I believe, did not love only his Jewish brothers, but men and women of all faiths.
Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all.
Does a follower of Christ despise the poor as “takers.” Does he despise the homeless or the hungry as “lazy” or deserving of their misery?
If a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, “You sit here in a good place,” while you say to the poor man, “You stand over there,” or, “Sit down at my feet,” have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?
Then who are these people who turn away immigrants and deride the poor and deny charity to the hungry? Are they true Christians or loud pretenders?
If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?
We wrote in The slippery slope of religious immorality, “The ostensible purpose of religion is to provide moral guidance. The foundation of morality is the Golden Rule: ‘Treat others as you wish to be treated.’”
But, we have the very base of the Republican party, a group that considers itself the “religious” right — followers of Christ. And they hate. It is what they do. Hatred is the distinguishing characteristic of the right.
They despise the poor. They despise the homeless and the immigrant. They despise those of another faith, the Muslim and most ironically, the Jew. They despise the powerless. They despise the elderly, the jobless, the unwed mothers and parentless children.
These pseudo followers of Christ, would deny destitute people medical care and unemployment compensation and Social Security. They sneer at those needing food stamps. These self-proclaimed Christians would send immigrant children back to misery and death.
To defend their cruelty, the pious fakers select passages from the bible, that allowed for ancient cruelty, while ignoring the fundamental meaning of the Bible. They invent a mean God to justify their own meanness.
They select one criminal as representing an entire race.
If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.
Then on Sunday, these pious pretenders nod their heads in unison, as the preacher intones about piety and pretense. And they think, by this, they are Christian.
They should feel shame, this Republican “base.” They should be ashamed to call themselves Christians, as should the politicians who sell their souls for a vote.
So, to answer the question, “How many Christians are there in America?” I ask you, how many followers of a loving and merciful Christ are there in America?
After all, what do I know? I am a Jew.

2. All deficit spending grows the supply of dollars
3. The limit to federal deficit spending is an inflation that cannot be cured with interest rate control.
4. The limit to non-federal deficit spending is the ability to borrow.

As the federal deficit growth lines drop, we approach recession, which will be cured only when the growth lines rise. Increasing federal deficit growth (aka “stimulus”) is necessary for long-term economic growth.

Rodger, what do you think should be our immigration policy?
Today, there are two groups of non-Americans who would like to live and work in the US: One group has applied for visas and is waiting in their native land, often for many years, for permission to come here; the other has declined to wait and has come without permission.
Are you in favor of the current policy, which allows the second group to stay and work, and shows our national middle finger to the first?
Or should we do away with the immigration process, and let everyone who wants to come and work do so, without government interference?
Or something else?

The answer to your question is in the question itself, ” . . . often for many years . . .”
Why must people wait “for many years”? What is purpose? It doesn’t do any good whatsoever.
It’s just a part of “Fortress America” that became part of our laws promulgated by xenophobes .
This nation, built by immigrants, now fears and loathes immigrants. It’s sad, what selfish cowards we have become.
My parents didn’t wait “for many years.” Nor did my grandparents.
How about yours?

So, no restrictions, no quotas? I don’t know what the “rules” were 120 years ago when my grandparents came over. Were there no controls then? The folklore is that everyone went through Ellis Island, very much controlled. I can’t find any historical data on immigration quotas prior to the 1920’s.

I said nothing about restrictions or quotas. Those are your words. I spoke only of time.
It doesn’t take years to determine whether someone should enter the country. Perhaps a month at most. So why make them wait years?
As for restrictions, I assume there should be some. Members of terrorist organizations should be barred. People with active cases of Ebola.
How about the tired, poor, huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of a teeming shore, the homeless, the tempest-tossed?
Republicans? 🙂

As for quotas, what is the purpose? Do you think America is overcrowded?
On average, about 884,000 foreigners have migrated to the U.S. a year, on net, since 2001.
America has 320 million people. So each year, less than 3 tenths of 1% of our population came here.
What if immigration doubled? That’s a huge jump, but it still would come to less than 6 tenths of 1%.
Is that too much? Will we feel crowded?
If immigration doubled, after 20 years, about 5% of our population would be immigrants. Does that squeeze us?
I hope you don’t buy into the nonsense that immigrants steal our jobs or increase crime rates.
Typically, quotas have been used to satisfy prejudice, as in: “No quota on Canadians, but a strict quota on Mexicans.”
But, perhaps you have some other criterion. What quotas do you think we should we have — and why?

There are limits today, that is why people wait so long, not because it takes a long time to process them. There are many times more people who apply for visas than the number allowed each year. That’s why people sneak in, or overstay tourist visas. There are not “quotas” like there used to be, limits per country, but an overall limit and limits for the various categories regardless of country.

So, you would do away with the limits in the law? Allow unlimited immigration, regardless of families, skills, or countries, except for the exclusions you listed?

You and Golfer have hit upon a misconception held by many. For many, and I believe, indeed most of the immigrants who come here illegally in defense of their families’ right to life in their home countries (and yes, by this I mean that the living have every right to pursue life beyond the moment they emerge from the womb irrespective of their country of origin) THERE IS NO LINE. The “line” is a myth. It’s simple enough to do the research on this. And for the lucky few who have relatives here, the line might not extend for years, but for decades.
And for those who condemn them for coming “without permission” I pity their wives (because it is mostly men you hear saying such things). If they know such a husband’s position on this they are left to wonder if they married a man or a mouse. But I take that back because even a mouse does not cower in a corner to watch its babies starve but uses what resourcefulness it has to secure sustenance. Apparently we expect less of ourselves and our bretheren.

Marx did’nt call religion “the opium of the poor” for nothing. They would of course be better off buying lottery tickets, since 1 chance gives better odds.
Equally of course, the rich only profess christianity to keep the 99% under subjugation. No way would they act like a true christian! Gotta keep the gap wide!

All religions are cursed with such bigots.
In the Mid East, extreme right wing Muslim bigots have co-oped Islam. In America, extreme right-wing Christian bigots have co-opted the Republican party, and become the Republican “base.”
Second, the false notion that Jews control the media (and the banks, and the businesses and Congress and perhaps even the rain from the sky), is too often given as an excuse to hate Jews.
According to the bigots, just 12 million Jews in worldwide existence are endowed with such mental and physical superiority, they can rule the 7 billion inferior people on earth. Does that pretty much summarize it?
(Too bad the Jews haven’t used their super powers to prevent so many millions from being murdered by haters, over the centuries.)

Types of Bigotry
The bigotry definition of hatred, fear, and intolerance of anyone who is not like us is the most discomforting quality of the human race. Bigotries are both universal and timeless which has robbed human beings of their rights through persecution and prejudice. Travel anywhere in the world and you will witness some form of bigotry.
In the United States the most common form of bigotry is ethnicity and most notably against those who are not of European lineage. Bigotry comes in many forms and to define bigoted an individual believes his culture, background and beliefs are better than others.
The bigot definition varies depending on what reference source you are using, but all have the same meaning in all languages; 1) is a person who is narrow-minded of any ideas other than his own, especially on religion, race, or politics; 2) any person who is extremely intolerant of another’s creed, opinion, or belief; 3) a person who regards members of a group with hatred: 4) a person who is openly against whose ideas or lifestyles are different from theirs.
To further define bigot it can be said a bigot will transfer their own low self-hatred and self-esteem to other religious, racial, or cultural groups. Regardless of the truth, they will single out, stereotype, lie, and make up instances about that group.

675,000 immigrants is way too low for a nation of 320,000,000. That’s just 2 tenths of 1 percent. Who came up with that number, and why? It’s a xenophobes number.
And even that is a gross number, not taking into consideration emigration.
Should be at least five times that high. Does a gross immigration rate of 1% a year sound too high?
And I really had to laugh about two of the criteria: “protecting refugees, and promoting diversity.”
Gimme a break. Is “protecting refugees and promoting diversity why we arrest and return children to the horrors of their past lives??
What I would do immediately is set up the manpower and procedures to process through, at least 4 million immigrants per year, with a waiting time of no more than a month.
And yes, the Ten Steps to Prosperity would need to be followed.

Good, so you are in favor of limits, and raising them is contingent upon the ten steps.
Me, too.
But, as long as there are limits there will be waiting, at least at first. There is more than a 5-year backlog already. According to another of your readers, it is decades long, and that’s just for relatives of those already here, who are given favored status.
The refugee thing applies to people who were persecuted in their home countries. Cuba, Viet Nam, Laos, Rwanda … It takes more than just being poor. And the diversity provision is that countries with low historic immigration get preference, and no single country gets more than 7% of the visas. That prevents Western Europe from dominating at the expense of other places like Latin America or Africa.

Yes, if (big “IF”) we found evidence we had too many immigrants, we’d have to set limits.
For now, I’ve seen no such evidence, so for at least a couple years, the only limit should be our ability to set up the manpower and procedures to process immigrants.
Everything to do with economics should be contingent on the Ten Steps.
So far, it sounds like you think everything is just fine, and no changes needed. Right?

Agreeing there should be limits, then going on to excuse and rationalize the unreasonable limits, is not agreeing.

“Canada will welcome between 260,000 and 285,000 new permanent residents in 2015,” or about 0.8% of the current population (proportionally three times more than the US). Just under 0.3% of those are “family and humanitarian” immigrants. I’m a WASP and have been out of the country for a couple of decades. When I visit my homeland, I’m a minority – few people look like me yet it’s absolutely fantastic. Great restaurant s, great technology environment and an invigorating mix of opinion, history and culture – a superb place. Makes me proud of the direction my country has taken with their immigration policy.
