Sometimes an idea has to become so obviously stupid that even the most intelligence-deprived among us will reject it.

Unfortunately, with regard to guns, we’re not quite there, yet.

I’m not just talking about the U.S. Supreme Court’s translation of this simple statement: [“A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state,] the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

(Some words are bracketed, because the U.S. Supreme Court believes the framers of the Constitution had some leftover words, and just tossed them in. Those words are to be ignored.)

Under the rule, “Bad law begets more bad law,” I’m also talking about the lengths to which the states have taken the Supreme Court’s bad law.

Ellijay, Georgia (CNN) — Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal signed a wide-ranging gun bill into law (which) specifies where Georgia residents can carry weapons. Included are provisions that allow residents who have concealed carry permits to take guns into some bars, churches, school zones, government buildings and certain parts of airports.

Wednesday’s signing came at an open-air picnic area along a creek in Ellijay, in northern Georgia. It opened with a prayer, the singing of the national anthem and a recital of the Pledge of Allegiance.

As everyone knows, gun lovers are our most patriotic citizens. The proof: They pray; they sing the national anthem; they recite the Pledge of Allegiance; they wave flags; they carry guns. What could be more patriotic than that?

Deal said the law allows residents to protect their families and expands the list of places where they can legally carry firearms, while allowing certain property owners, namely churches and bars, to make judgments on whether they want worshippers and patrons carrying guns.

The governor said the law “will protect the constitutional rights of Georgians who have gone through a background check to legally obtain a Georgia Weapons Carry License.

Hey, wait a second. Why should churches and bars be exempt from the Constitution?

And if someone has passed a so-called “background check” (snicker, snicker), why should they not be able to carry a gun anywhere they want, including into Georgia’s Congress and courts?

. . . the version Deal signed Wednesday doesn’t allow guns on college campuses . . . except in certain cases.

WHAT??! No guns on college campuses, either? Why should students be deprived of their Constitutional protections?

. . . it allows guns in TSA lines at the country’s busiest airport, forces community school boards into bitter, divisive debates about whether they should allow guns in their children’s classrooms, and broadens the conceal carry eligibility to people who have previously committed crimes with guns.

While the bill says no one is allowed to carry a firearm past an airport’s security screening checkpoint, it allows guns in other areas, including “an airport drive, general parking area, walkway, or shops and areas of the terminal that are outside the screening checkpoint.”

WHAT??! No guns past the TSA lines on onto airplanes? Why not? If someone has gone through a “background check” (snicker, snicker) surely he should be allowed to carry a gun all the way up to the gate and onto the plane — to protect against terrorists and other criminals.

And why are criminals denied their Constitutional rights, so long as they have passed a “background check” (snicker, snicker)?

Deal also touted how HB60 would allow soldiers to obtain a carry license at age 18 if they’ve completed basic training and are either actively serving or have been honorably discharged.

“If they’re old enough to hold a gun in defense of our liberties, then they’re old enough to hold a gun, and they shouldn’t have to wait until they’re 21.”

As everyone knows, discharged soldiers are saner and more mature than other people, and always can be trusted not to shoot anyone.

And please, let’s not discuss PTSD.

Other notable provisions of the law allow hunters to use silencers and suppressors when the owner of the property where they’re hunting is aware they’re using such a device. . .

Yes, the owner of land is the best judge of whether a “hunter” should use a silencer. (By the way, when people use silencers, what exactly are they hunting?)

(The law permits) gun owners who have had their licenses revoked to apply for a new license after three years . . . and forbids police officers who see a resident carrying a gun to ask for their permit unless they’re committing a crime.

“Excuse me, Mr. Armed Man Wearing A Mask And Walking Into A Bank, I know you’re allowed to carry a gun anywhere, and I’m not even allowed to see your gun permit, so please, please don’t shoot anyone.”

Another provision of the new law allows firearms into any government building that is open for business and doesn’t have security personnel restricting access or screening visitors.

WHAT??! Why should guns be prohibited by security personnel, if the visitor has passed a “background check” (snicker, snicker)?

If the Governor of Georgia really believed that guns “allow residents to protect their families,” why should this protection be denied at airport gates, on college campuses and in bars and churches — and especially in state legislatures and courtrooms?

After all, isn’t that where residents need the most protection from criminals?

But wait. Deal addressed that objection.

The Capitol fell under a wider statewide provision that affects many government buildings, and it’s “a uniform carved-out area all across our state.“

So that explains it. The Capitol is a “carved out area.” Huh?

But, are local courts also “carved out areas”? We don’t know.

However, it seems likely, that Governor Deal’s brain, along with the brains of Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and John Roberts also are “carved out areas,” totally devoid of common sense.

But really, why no guns in Congress?

And when will this all become stupid enough for even the stupidest to recognize the stupidity?

  1. Chipotle asks customers to not wave guns around their stores, causing gun nuts to threaten boycott

    Earlier this month, members of a Texas group calling itself Open Carry Tarrant County marched into their local Dallas-area Chipotle and scared customers half to death. As you can see from this image, these two young gun slingers (and others) were armed with assault weapons and semiautomatic handguns, posing for photos.

    Are these the “good guys” or the “bad guys”? Hey, they’re just protecting their rights.

    And then, there’s this:

    NRA against smart guns

    Now why would the NRA oppose smart guns (guns that can be fired only by their owners)? Here is the reason:

    They’re afraid the smart guns would be smarter than the vast majority of NRA members and followers.

    Is it stupid enough, yet?

  2. There were sure alot of gun lovers in Viginia Tech, Columbine, Sandy Hook and the other mass shootings.

    Oh wait, no there wasn’t. Maybe the court has actually gotten something right?

    1. I wonder where the kids got those guns. Hmmm . . .

      Oh wait, Adam Lanza acquired his gun from his mother, who bought it to protect herself. Sadly, she was the first one Lanza killed — with her own gun — not an uncommon occurrence.

      And, oh wait, again. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold acquired their guns from someone who bought them from unlicensed dealers at a gun show. Of course, gun shows don’t really monitor the sale of guns, because as the NRA and gun nuts “know,” any monitoring is a government plot to take away your guns.

      And, oh wait, yet again. Seung-Hui Cho was diagnosed with, and was receiving treatment for, severe depression and anxiety disorder. Yet was able to purchase guns from a licensed dealer. Hey, why not?

    1. If the bad old government comes for you, you have no shot. Do you reside in the inner city? How many times have you been in a situation where you’ve needed to pull a weapon to protect yourself? You are a paranoid person Curt. Have you considered treatment for your paranoia? It’s a real jungle out there in Curt’s world. I believe you watch far too many movies and TV cop shows.

      1. Well sir, how many times have you used your life insurance? Home fire insurance? Auto insurance? A firearm is insurance and like all other insurance, not using it is the best one can hope for.
        The fabric of society is very thin. I learned this first hand during the aftermath of Sandy. The police will not be there for you in a natural disaster, they never came when My wife and my neighbor called. These events can happen anywhere and can strike anytime. Best luck to you,

          1. Oh please, I would never violate an anti gun person by coming to their aide with a gun. I’ll dial 911 while I peek through the curtain. That alone is more effort than most people are willing to expend helping their neighbor.

          1. We had no cell phone service and only had landline telephone because my generator powered the heat, a few lights and the telephone, yes our phone must be plugged in. My neighbor had a light and telephone from the extension cord plugged into my generator. This was day 7 of dark streets and houses and virtually no gasoline yet I needed 4 gallons a day for power which I got searching for mile long gas lines at the occasional service station that had gas by waiting on a gas can line. Autos ran out of gas on these lines and fights were breaking out to the point every open station with gas would also have a heavy police presence.
            When the FAA realized controllers had no gas to get to work, FEMA provided a heavily guarded gas tanker at the control center. However,I could not fill my cans there. Snow fell, temps dropped below freezing. Gas thievery was rampant.
            On this night, while at work, wife called in a panic that two men parked in front of the house next door, got out of the car, pulled up hoodies and at least one walked towards our house. She was scared and I figured they wanted to steal the generator, the gas or both. I left work for the extra long drive home due to trees that had not yet been cleared. My wife and neighbor both called the police…they never came.
            My wife got the gun and dropped the shade to the window overlooking the generator and saw one man outside, apparently he saw her too, with the gun because they ran directly to their car and sped off before I got there. Both my neighbor, a single woman, and my wife were scared to death.
            You go ahead and wait for the police, in a disaster they wont be there for you.

        4. Ooooooo! Hoodies. Oooooooo. Well that proves it. If they wore hoodies, they must have been criminals.

          And hell, I’d run too if I saw an idiot standing in the window with a gun. Wouldn’t you? Maybe the poor guys wanted to ask for help or information, and gee, maybe they wore hoodies because of the weather. Did that ever occur to you.

          Of course not. That never would occur to a paranoid gun nut. In gun nuts’ paranoid world, everyone is an enemy to be blown away — especially if they wear a hoodie.

          You’re lucky your neighbor didn’t blow you away, when you knocked on his door. You didn’t wear a hoodie, did you?

        5. Yes, in the mind of a PGN (Paranoid Gun Nut) anyone coming to his door is “trespassing” and is a criminal and should be met with a gun.

          Were the guys lost on a dark road and hoping to ask for directions? No, the hoodies prove they were criminals.

          Gosh, if only they hadn’t pulled up those hoodies on that cold night. That was the clear sign they were “trespassing” criminals.

          Live in fear, PGN. And remember to snuggle up to your gun, like a two-year-old with his “blankie.”

          The odds are much greater that an innocent person will be killed with your gun, than a criminal.

  4. Gun nuts always seem to be extremists. It’s either, “Everyone carry every gun everywhere” or “Turn in your guns.” I guess that’s what makes them nuts.

    Guns are a serious economic problem, the same as any nation-wide, fatal disease. No place for extremists.

    And really, why are guns barred from Congress?

    1. Do you really not understand the difference between guns and kitchen knives, or are you just parroting the typical NRA response to any concern about unlimited guns, everywhere?

      You forgot to mention cars, which also kill people. I assume you also don’t understand the difference between cars and guns.

      And recently, there was a plane crash that killed 235 people. Do you understand the difference between planes and guns?

      Also, many high steel workers are killed every year. Shall we ban skyscrapers?

      It truly is sad how the NRA has indoctrinated the gullible to parrot the excuses for guns, that even the NRA knows are phony.

      You do realize that the NRA is the mouthpiece for the munitions manufacturers, and is paid to propagandize the populace. Right?
